This As We Recount The People, Places, and Things Affected by The Infamous Storm on June 25, 2024
A massive storm has shook up the Monroe County, Indiana area on Tuesday causing lasting destruction and leaving thousands without power.
On Tuesday, near 80 mph winds gusted through Bloomington bringing down trees, and parts of sidings leaving massive damage and power outages across town that many are describing as being in a war zone.
Traffic was backed up for miles around 7 p.m. through the end of the night, and according to FOX 59 News in Indianapolis, the city has even sent an emergency declaration to the state calling Bloomington and Monroe County as a disaster area.
Photos of the devastation were captured onto social media, and the photos are not just haunting, they are somewhat disturbing as one Reddit user said, “We have to accept this [new line of weather systems ravaging through Bloomington in the last three years] as our new reality now.”
People are left without power, food, and shelter as the most displaced population has been affected the most.
The scenes this morning were also errie as power has been out throughout the day.
At the City of Bloomington Animal Care and Control Center, they have reported, “We urgently need bedding for our animals as we have no way to operate our laundry machines without power. We could really use towels, blankets, comforters, dog beds, etc.”
As of this report, 40,000 people have been left without power with the worst outages out occuring at the west and north ends of Monroe County according to the Duke Energy outage map with more outages reported outside of Bloomington in towns such as Ellettsville and Spencer also seeing significant damage.
Also as of this report, thousands of work trucks have been sitting outside of IU Memorial Football Stadium to help assist in power outage efforts according to Facebook group, “Bloomington, IN Roads.”
The east side of Bloomington is about 90% of the way back to power, but other people, even on the outskirts of town, have not been so lucky with a lot of stories being left out by the Bloomington media.
Neighbors from far and wide have helped the city in this great need, and one user on Reddit pointed that the scenes of neighbors helping neighbors and students helping students in this great deal of support has been nothing but “wholesome.”
This as the city of Bloomington and the surrounding area is getting closer to being on the road to recovery after the storm yesterday slowly but surely.
