The Bakery of Do's & Dough-Nots of Long's Bakery
A Creamy Look at The Shootings & Mysteries at One Indiana Donut Shop on National Donut Day
Today is National Donut Day, and I am not eating any donuts for the first time ever because I am not near a bakery.
I missed this one old bakery in Odon that closed from an in-person store to a food truck that drives down to southern Indiana once a year and has since moved up to northern Indiana because it has such good donuts.
However, as I take a break from watching the University of Evansville Baseball Super Regionals matchup versus the Tennessee Volunteers, I finally am enjoying a free warm donut and talking to you about one of the great Indianapolis institutions I have never tried in all my years living in Indiana.
That place is Longβs Donuts in Indianapolis, and we are taking a look at both of the following locations at North Tremont Street five minutes away from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway & at a lesser known location on the Southside of Indy.
For context, Longβs Donuts has been one of the most iconic hotspots in Indianapolis, and as the state has recorded the greatest tourism years in decades, more people will be going to the bakery especially during the USA Swimming Qualifiers at Lucas Oil Stadium on the 15th of this year.
In short, Longβs Donuts is a Naptown institution.
Open since 1955, Longβs Donuts is known for its famed glazed donuts and sign on the Tremont Road location that could be recognized by the goers of such events as the Indy 500 as it is five minutes away from the town of Speedway.
According to FOX 59 News, the first Longβs Donuts location first sold donuts for only under 69 cents back when the store first opened.
It was not just the only story you will ever hear in this whole article featuring this featuring this kind of deliciously gooey goodness because this place is cursed yet a hotspot to go eat your favorite donuts and read your morning paper.
This year, in 2024, Longβs Donuts has become a hotbed for shootings and mysterious murders that occurred outside of the store after an employee of the store had to assist in first aid to a shooting victim.
On May 24, 2024, just two days before the Indy 500, a shooting shocked the region as a customer was shot in the parking lot of the store. As this was going on a staff member was praised for helping assist a gunshot victim who was shot near the store.
The man was severely wounded as police arrived on the scene
Shootings are nothing new as this wasnβt the first incident as crime happens here a lot.
There were also two separate incidents in both 2017 and 2018 where a young mom was shot just outside of the Tremont Road store, this is where a lot of the grizzly shootings have happened.
The death of Jasmine Moore, the mother shot outside of the Longβs Bakery store in 2017, sparked security changes to a store not familiar with murder or homicides happening even outside of their stores.
It has proven that the Indianapolis crime rates have skyrocketed since the COVID-19 Pandemic, but thanks to the change in crime tactics, these unfortunately tragic situations (and I want to give a remembrance to those who have died) were not over donuts, as some may have been about, but also about greed as many of these shootings were unrelated to the victim. But shootings at random.
The death of Jasmine Moore was one of the most tragic shootings in Marion County history, and her death helped strengthen security after the shooting of Chevis Kellum in 2018, the store felt safe from crime until 2024 with the occasional shootings outside of the area.
After these three major incidents, Long's Bakery has become known as a place where spirits are believed to dine alongside customers and find a final resting place in a historic establishment that has attracted many spirits over the years.
The next time you visit Longβs Bakery, remember the lives before you who have parked in that parking lot regardless of if they were eating donuts or not.
Also, Happy National Donuts Day
